Different Types of Dog Breeds
There are literally hundreds of different types of dog breeds. Looking for a dog that is a specific breed can sometimes be a time consuming process, at least if you want to adopt one from the humane society or some other group that houses stray dogs. If you simply want to purchase a specific breed from a professional breeder, then your search can take as long as it takes to enter the breed type into an internet search engine.
Many people choose a specific dog breed because they like the physical characteristics of that particular type of dog. Obviously a person who likes size and strength of a German Shepherd will not really be inclined to adopt a small Chihuahua or any other type of lap dog. In the same fashion, a woman who wants a simple companion to take care of and even go on flights with her across the country would not choose a German Shepherd or any other dog breed that is generally rather large.
Before you adopt a pet, it is a good idea to have some idea in mind as to what type of dog breed or breeds you are interested in. Another factor you want to keep in mind is how you will interact with your future dog. If you like to go running outside and want to bring along your dog, you may want to make sure you consider dog breeds that are good at running for some distance and that likes to be outdoors. After centuries of domestication, many dog breeds are simply not fit for running outside for long distances. You would not want to bring a Chihuahua out on a run with you through the park. However, they do enjoy moderate walks. So if you like to walk outside, you may consider smaller dog breeds and look at those types of dogs.
Along with dog breeds, you will also want to think about how much time you will be able to spend at home with your pet. Puppies require a lot of attention for the first few months and up to the first year, no matter what type of dog breed. Also, some dog breeds tend to be much more social and do not like to be alone. If you are not going to be able to spend much time at home with your pet, you may consider getting a second dog to keep the first pet company. Different dog breeds do get along together very well most of the time so you can even choose a completely different type of breed for your second pet.
When you are deciding on possible dog breeds, it can be very difficult to narrow the choices down to a specific type and then also find a dog from that breed. However, this is a decision that should not be rushed. Take your time and really do your due diligence and research. Getting a dog is not like buying a television or a refrigerator. When you adopt a dog, no how many different dog breeds you looked at; you are adding a new member to your family. Different dog breeds do have certain personality traits associated with them so beyond any physical attributes, you will also want to take into consideration the temperament of each of the dog breeds. Some are better suited to children while others don't like children at all. No matter what, make sure that you find out as much information as you can about all of the different types of dog breeds.
