All About Choke Collars
Almost all dog owners begin their companionship with their dog by saying "I will never purchase a choke collar". They believe that they are some sort of a torture device meant to harm dogs. The truth is that a choke collar, when used properly, can be a wonderful training tool and can help you and your friend to enjoy walking together.
Some dogs take right to leash training and will stay by your side instantly. Others, however, have the need to explore or the need to pull. Dogs that are independent will pull on the leash because they want to see what is over the next horizon, while dogs that are bred to pull will do so simply because it is in their genetics. After a dozen walks where your dog begins to walk you, almost any owner will be ready to look into a choke collar.
There are two kinds of choke collars: ones that have metal prongs inside of them and ones that do not. If you are extremely uncomfortable with the idea of a choke collar, start by using one that has no prongs on the inside of it. A slip-on choke collar basically works by tightening around your dog's neck when you give it a quick yank, thereby disciplining him when he begins to pull during your walk.
Many owners misuse choke collars and believe that their dog will stop pulling once they feel the collar tighten. This is not so. In order to use it effectively and harmlessly, you need to give a quick yank to the side whenever your dog is straying from the walk. With a bit of patience and practice, you and your dog can take long walks together without you having to pull on the collar at all.
