Dog Agility Training

It used to be that if you wanted to train your dog to do something spectacular, you had to teach him how to be a show dog, how to hunt, or how to catch a Frisbee. While these are still excellent things that you and your dog can do together, there is another very popular sport that many owners and dog teams train together to do: agility training.

Agility courses are much like an obstacle course, except that they are made for a dog. There are plenty of different obstacles that you may see on any one course, and the order that they are in often varies to make it more difficult for the dog and the handler to complete the course successfully. Some classic obstacles that you will train your dog to navigate are the dog walk, the teeter-totter, the tunnel, the A-frame, jumps, the weave poles, and the pause box.

There are dozens of different ways to work with your dog on learning how to navigate the obstacles successfully, and every handler has their own tricks. The best thing to do is to read up on the different kinds of training methods, from food training to using constant hand motions for your dog, before you decide which method you want to try. Whatever you choose, make sure that you stay consistent.

It is also a good idea to train your dog to do one obstacle at a time. Once you have mastered a specific obstacle, you can move on to another. You can then put all of the obstacles together to create your own agility course. Agility training can be the ultimate exercise in trust and obedience and is an excellent way to spend quality time with your four-legged family member.
