There is nothing more enjoyable than taking your dog for a long walk. It doesn't matter whether you're walking in the city or enjoying the beautiful weather in the country, a walk with your dog can be one of the most peaceful times of the day. But what starts as a peaceful walk can turn into a huge frustration for both you and your dog if you do not have your dog trained to walk on a leash. If you have a puppy who is taking you for a walk, or you adopt an older dog who was never leash trained, you need to nip the situation in the bud quickly.

If you are just getting your puppy used to a leash, allow him to get the feel for it before you go for a walk. Attach it to his collar and let him walk around the house for a bit so that he isn't scared by the feeling. Do not let him do so for too long, though, or he will think that he will be able to walk around wherever he wants at all times.

When you go outside with your puppy, never allow him to pull. Give him a quick, firm jerk to the side or tap his back leg a bit when he is pulling to correct him. Owners who have adult dogs who refuse to listen during a walk may want to invest in a choke collar. This collar is not meant to choke the dog, but rather to help you to deliver the correction when you yank quickly to the side when your dog starts pulling. With some training, for both of you, you and your dog can enjoy a long, leisurely walk together without any frustration.
